| My DD has indicated she'd like to learn more about Law and Finance. I'd like to enroll her in a summer course in the two areas so that she understand what these fields are about. (We aren't looking for any adminissions bumps with this, just something that can truly be beneficial for her in terms of learning more about the two fields of study.) Anyone with a recommendation? We prefer online vs in person, but if there are in-person schools in DMV, we can look into it. |

You could consider doing an ASU online course (either direct or from Study Hall: https://gostudyhall.com/courses/)
I believe the courses are $25 & if you’re happy with your grade, another $400 will give you college credit. |
Are these considered dual enrollment? |
|
Skip finance bc it’s oversubscribed imo?

Don't be dim. Learning the basics of finance is useful in all aspects of life-whether the OP's kid chooses to study it in college or not. |

Don't skip finance. It's a skill that has a huge rate of return and can be passed down to children.
I made minimum wage for two decades. Not only did I survive, I still have all the money I ever made and then some. I also retired very early. Being good with money is the best side hustle. |
Wow. This looks like an amazing (and low cost / low risk) thing to try. Thanks for sharing! Do you know anyone whose kids did it? I’m wondering how engaging it actually is for a rising sophomore. |
I do not. I tried to convince my kid & he rolled his eyes at me. However, there’s a lot of info on Reddit by students talking about this. The consensus seemed to be from great to meh; I saw very little, if any, “this is terrible”. To another poster: I doubt it’s considered dual enrollment bc you’re not getting high school credit as well (the dual part). HOWEVER, if you do opt for college credit on the classes, you will need to provide ASU transcript. I did look at transferability to several public school my child is interested in & various ASU online courses transferred so it does seem portable. |

^^provide ASU transcript on college apps.
Could be a plus or just neutral in application process. I believe you have a year to decide if you want to upgrade for credit |
| I don't think an online class is better that watching YouTube channels or Great Courses on Kanopy |
| OP here. I am not looking for dual enrollment credits for this. The ASU courses are primarily focused on individual course study. My kid wanted general awareness of what these fields of study involve. As for watching YouTube, I just don't think it goes into what the fields of study are about. |

W&M online
UVA Nova in person |
I’m the ASU person. I just don’t think an online program is going to get you what you want, particularly for the price. Here’s W&M https://precollegeonline.wm.edu/venture-capital It’s functionally a course on entrepreneurship at like 4x the cost of ASU courses. Now, UMD IIRC has in-person program. |
| Johns Hopkins CTY has some amazing online courses. |
