| Relocated to Montgomery county recently, and have a 9 year old son who plays hockey. Any feedback on the MYHA travel program? Other nearby clubs that are better? |
| If you live close to it, it's a good choice. It has teams at all skill levels. I don't think any other clubs would give you significantly more if MYHA is closest. |
| MYHA is a very large program, especially at younger age groups. It’s perfect if you live close to Rockville ice arena. Tri City is also good. Both programs attract a lot of talent so they have a lot of success and great parent coaches, facilities. By 16U it gets hard to make a team at MYHA but that is also the age when some kids drop travel to focus on high school hockey or other interests. |
| When are the tryouts? |
Tryouts for a 9 year old start March 20th for MYHA and around that time for other clubs. Sign ups are open now. |

If you are living in Montgomery, MYHA is your answer.
If your son plays there next year and it's not a good fit for some reason, then explore other options. MYHA is a large, solid club. They develop good players and do well in the CBHL standings across multiple age groups and skill levels. |

Depends where in Montgomery county. Cmon. But it is a good club. My kids played there for a couple seasons an had fairly good experiences. Although the striver parents there can be a bit much, and tend to stick their noses in more than other places, with things like what line their kid is on and who their line mates are. Op, where in Moco? Believe it or not, reston and st James, and tricity, can actually be more convenient from certain parts of Moco. Rockville ice area can be a serious pita. And the rink is one of the worse ones in the area for watching you kid on a nightly basis. |
| A lot of politics. Volunteer, parental coaches are not always good. There are better programs out there, but if you live very close to that rink, give it a try. |
Are you saying you think living in Montgomery County, MD and crossing the American Legion bridge in rush hour traffic twice a week to get to Reston or St. James practice is more convenient than driving to Rockville? That is a surprising statement. I disagree, but you do you. |
If you live close to the Clara Barton on ramp…yes. The slug up 270 or falls is no fun either. |
| ^ and if you’re in silver spring tce is actually easier. Moco is a big county that isn’t easy to navigate. |
| Olney to TCE is great via 200. |
| There are far worse rinks in the area than Rockville! At least it is warm and has a bar lol! |
| DS plays house at MYHA and previously played house at MedStar in VA. MYHA is head and shoulders above. The communications and leadership are great and they go to great lengths to make well balanced teams and get each kid in the right place. Assuming the people who run the travel program overlap with the house leadership, you may find the same positives that we have. There are also three rink options on Montgomery which expands opportunities for training and competition. |
What were the biggest issues with Rooftop at MedStar? We were thinking of trying it because the schedule and location are more convenient for us than Rockville. |
