NYU faculty going on strike

Anonymous
NYU contingent faculty have authorized a strike. They want higher pay and academic freedom. I wish NYU would pay the people who teach our kids, instead of paying for the travel of administrators' spouses, for example.

NYU faculty are well compensated.

I think you misunderstand. Tenured faculty maybe but more and more colleges rely very heavily on ‘adjunct’ professors who work for low pay and no benefits or job stability. Is that what you’re paying 92k a year for?

The admin cohort is bloated. Everyone knows it but no one seems willing to fix it, including parents who demand all sorts of services unrelated to academics for their dc

The contingent faculty discussed in the article make $85k. That's hardly well compensated, especially in NYC.

You might be thinking of tenured/tenure track faculty or even adjuncts, who often have other jobs. The focus of this strike are contingent faculty, who work for NYU full time, have higher teaching loads than tenure track faculty, and are still expected to do research. They make up an increasingly large percentage of professors at all schools, but especially NYU.

Millions of theater kids cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced at this thought.

Also mathematicians, artists, writers, health workers, those interested in business/economics, social scientists…

NYU is very lucky to be in a city that so many students want. They rely heavily on tuition dollars and international money.

I found it pretty subpar compared to other universities in terms of culture and quality of staff.

Did you go there or teach there? If so, what other schools did you attend or teach at in order to do your comparison?
