I am writing this very tired and blurry eyed from no sleep. I recently adopted almost one month old puppy (maybe 9 months old?). He was doing fine in the crate and letting the family sleep thru the night..10am - 5/6 am. Most morning he barked us awake at 6 am (has a freakishly accurate internal clock). We tend to him when he wakes us up at 6 am. Once awake, we would walk him, and every day he would pee and poop first thing. However, yesterday morning, he had not pooped that morning. We thought it was odd. Then, randomly, sometime that morning, he had a soft but still shaped like a log poop in his crate (I found the poop when the crate was open..so not sure when it happened). It was odd still! I could tell he did not like it though because he tried to pull the soiled mattress out of the crate. Fast- forward two hours later, I had to crate him for about three hours while we went to visit another family (I gave him multiple bathroom breaks beforehand). When I did this once before he was fine. When we returned, he had pooped in the crate.
This morning he barked us awake around 1 am... I ignored it a bit thinking he might go back to bed. But the barking got louder...then we found out he pooped in the crate! We cleaned him up.. and my husband walked him. Apparently the dog had diarrhea during the walk. We cleaned him up and went back to bed. Then an hour later he barked again! This time we immediately got him, he did not poop in the crate but pooped again outside during the walk.
Anyway, am I facing a crate train regression or just upset stomach? Should I ignore his barks, or immediately tend to him because it could be he really needs to go?
