Indiana University- Diversity

Any insight into what this school would be like for a black girl from NOVA? Campus is lovely and people seem friendly but we know absolutely nothing about the Midwest and how she would fit in. Appreciate any insight at all!

Curious as well. I’ve heard some not great things.

I wouldn't send my black kid there. But there's a lot of schools I wouldn't consider for the lack of diversity. Wisconsin, UTK, Vermont, Boulder, Kansas, Kentucky. I'm sure your kid will have a decent time and unlikely to face overt racism but I would struggle wondering if my kid would feel accepted, valued, and not a token. Does she have more diverse options?

Black male Kelley alum from MD here. I’d choose IU again and again. Have her visit and see if she likes it but I’d highly recommend it.

Black population at IU is 4-5 %

At other schools:

UVA - 7-9%
Virginia Tech - 6%
Williams College - 2%

For what major?

My (white) DD is considering IU, but not for Kelley. We visited recently. To me it feels like IU is all about Kelley, Jacobs Music, and then everything else. Kelley seems like it’s more diverse.

FWIW, I lived in Asia for 5 years, and we just had an amazing Korean meal in Bloomington that was better than anything I’ve had an Annandale or the DC area recently, run by an older Korean couple. It was surprising to find in Indiana.

K Bap, walking distance to the Courtyard Bloomington, and 10-15 min walk from Sample Gates.

Maybe the University of Maryland would be a better fit?
