My son is depressed. We didn’t receive any email. It’s possible they sent out email to ppl still in the running…

Great tech they have there.

Your kid might be the most amazing applicant ever, but the odds are obviously stacked against MIT RD admission. Presumably he won't be surprised even if a bit disappointed.

That said, the admissions office jumped in immediately to say that it wasn't legit. The "hoard" rather than "hard" in the first line was a pretty good tell.

Hang in there for another 11 days.

OP here - Truth is we already know he doesn’t have a shot.

We are dreading the decision date as DC will be disappointed.

Schools do this every year and it’s awful. Yes mistakes happen, but on something so important, it feels like there could be a little more care.

Good businesses go the step beyond apologizing to trying to make it right when they make a mistake. Hard to make this right because they can’t just admit kids just because they said they were in. But how about at least refunding the application fee since competent application processing wasn’t provided??

They should honor those acceptances.

Not true. The admissions office said that the email was legit, but was a mistake.

Not quite sure what that means? It was a legit email with a typo but mistakenly what? The recipients were a mistake? The emails itself was a mistake? The timing was a mistake?

Legit in the sense that it was from MIT, not a fishing email. But it was mistakenly sent by MIT.

It was sent by the actual MIT admissions office, but in error. They have not clarified whether the error was that the email went out too soon to actual future admits or whether it went out to an arbitrary subset of applicants and is meaningless.

Did you all even click through to read?

It was an email to parents talking about next steps. It’s wasn’t acceptances sent to students.

And doesn’t MIT have a portal anyway?

It started with "congrats on your child's acceptance to MIT" and it was sent to a small set of parents.

The logical conclusion is that it was the former since a acceptance email was connected with a particular address list.
