Sheridan

I haven’t found any dedicated threads about this school. DC was admitted for 4th grade. I would be interested in hearing view on the school (student community, academic rigor, and outplacement). Thank you

We are a Sheridan family completing DD's 8th grade year. We have loved it. Small school, attentive faculty, kids are incredibly kind. If your kid is an academic superstar they have room to blossom. If not there's plenty of support. Sports are an "everyone plays" situation which means kids get to try sports they'd be intimidated to try or unable to at larger schools. DD did great and she is headed to Sidwell for 9th, unless the GDS waitlist moves. Best of luck to your DC.

We are a Sheridan family of a middle schooler. We also have a kid who graduated from Sheridan. It is a school that truly has the best of everything, academic rigor + joy of learning in everything, many sports options, annual musical performance (top quality for a K-8), social-emotional development and support. As for the outplacement, I know you have a few years still but every year (I am aware of) 8th graders get into more than one great high school and then the conversation becomes how hard it is to make a decision where to go among all great options (in other words, it is not something to worry about at all).

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Sheridan. We've been there 9 years and our kiddo was accepted to four high schools and wait listed at one. Sheridan is a loving, kind and academically challenging school. HOS is outstanding, the board is active and engaged and our son has been incredibly happy and thriving since we got there. His confidence has soared, his friendships are rich and his teachers KNOW him. The small format is special and with the new renovation - there is a bit more room for things. The mountain campus is a game changer for kids and parents. I'll miss it dearly - and would never hesitate to recommend it.

We were just WL here for a non-entry year. It was our top choice (significant financial aid, thanks to all the gov layoffs :/). I'm wondering if anyone has a sense of whether Sheridan ever denies applications or if everyone who isn't accepted gets WLs.

DS went to Sheridan K-8 and is now in graduate school. I can see a very obvious throughline between his foundational years at Sheridan and his love of learning at a rigorous high school. Sheridan set him up with amazing critical thinking and writing skills and love of learning and intellectual curiosity. The school fosters poise in kids that i think is related to the environment of joy/safety but also “challenge by choice” that fosters confidence and agency.

If I were faced with the decision today, almost 20 years later, I would make the same choice.

Is Sheridan difficult to get into?

Another Sheridan parent here and foundational is a great word. We too would do Sheridan all over again. The small size of the school means that everybody gets individual attention. And that environment (individual attention, strong community, strong culture of participation in clubs and sports) is like an incubator for kids to thrive at their secondary schools. Sheridan kids have gone on to do all kinds of great things in their respective high schools and they often are chosen as team captains in their sports teams or editor in chiefs of the school paper. My theory is that Sheridan is a place where kids are encouraged to step up and try something. And the other upside is that kids get to choose the high school that is right for them. Outplacement has been supurb. If you are considering the school, don't think twice. It's one of the best decisions we have made for our family.

Sheridan and Lowell are pretty much the same, right?

Sheridan is more rigorous than Lowell in the middle school.

Do the kids all stay friends with each other after middle school?

Of course and they make new friends at their new schools. It’s a very tight knit community in the best possible way.

And they compete in different athletic leagues.

I went to a K-8 school like Sheridan (same size, maybe a little smaller, and in another city), and I would totally recommend it. I'm still in touch with classmates 25+ year later. It's not that everything is perfect and harmonious all the time, but you have these bonds that are really special.
