Just Got My Blood Test Results And My Total Cholesterol Number Is…………….

Anonymous
I am fifty-seven and just had my blood tested in a lab, I haven’t had it tested in like five years.

I know, I know…..

Anyway my total cholesterol came back at 347 (shouldn’t exceed 200.)
Is this really high?

I have an obese friend who is on statins and she said it isn’t high enough for meds because hers is way higher.
But considering my age I am wondering if I should see my Dr. (PCP) and see what he thinks I should do.

I have read that I could be susceptible to a stroke or heart attack……
Is anyone on here above 200?

DH’s was around 300 when he went on statins. I would think yours is plenty high to qualify for statins. Good luck!

That seems pretty high. I am 42 and my cholesterol is about 195 with the good cholesterol (is that HDL?) higher than the bad cholesterol.

You honestly need to talk to your doc. Do not crowd source your health. You know it's bad. What do you want from us?

That is high. Your doctor will want you on meds.

You need to see your doctor. Can’t answer this online and I say this as a pcp. Too many variables to consider. I will say though if your pcp says to get on a med- please do. You don’t want a heart attack/ stroke etc in the future

Yes. Mine shot up at menopause. It's now 229 and I'm fit and exercise plenty. My cardiologist said that more important than the overall number is the ratio between good and bad. My ratio is fine. Also important is that my calcium score is zero. So no statins for me yet.

You need to check with doctor not us!

Just saying this based on my own experience. That is high cholesterol (mine was over 400). But it turned out it was caused by a non-cardio condition that needed urgent attention. Since it was applicable in my case, I strongly suggest you talk to your PCP and have a comprehensive urinalysis done.

I wonder if menopause has anything to do w/mine.

This sounds like a huge cry for attention!

Once mine was over 300 doctors all pushed me to go on statins. They would look at my number and freak out a little.
I have genetic hyperchoolemia so even though I tried lifestyle changes, my number kept going up and up.
I finally agreed to go on statins. My number went down immediately.
I do think I have mild side effects of faster muscle fatigue but overall, I feel fine and hopefully I've increased my mortality.

Talk to your doctor. They go by ratios now to determine whether you need medication, not only by the number you are citing. They look at your hdl, ldl and a bunch of other blood test results. What were your triglycerides?

That's insanely high.
Often there is a genetic component. Skinny fit people can thus get high cholesterol. And Widowmaker blocked arteries.
FFS you should be on a statin. I was put on one with reading of just under 200.

You really need to see pcp asap, get on a statin. Thats dangerous.
