| Kid is in Algebra this year in middle school - is this part of MCAP testing? We may need to travel out of country for 3 weeks in late March. Can this test be taken when we come back if we get permission from Principal? |
Hi, you can't travel out of the country for 3 weeks in March and not have your kid impacted. 10 days of consecutive absences will result in your kid being unenrolled from MCPS. You need to stop and revisit your travel plans. |
Not OP, but with Spring Break you could be out for 23 days at the end of March and beginning of April and not miss ten days of school. |
OP. Yes, that was my plan. To use the Spring Break Days and if needed get an excused absence where my kids will not be unenrolled. I'm more concerned about the testing and if the testing falls around that time frame, can my kid can do it later? |
Does the withdrawal after ten days of absences mean/do anything to families? To my knowledge when families return, they just reenroll them and families don't really know the difference, other then that they had their students out of school for a period and returned. And the withdrawal/reenrollment is more to protect the schools from having students with a high number of absences. With the MCAP, they'll have students continually retake the test until they meet the requirements, which to my knowledge is take the test only. So if your student didn't meet the requirement in the given administration, they'll have the student take the test in the next administration. Your student may have some disadvantages in having a gap from when they last learned the material and may not do as well in the test. Not sure if that's a big deal to you. There are some tests, the Life Sciences and Government, where the scores account for part of the final grade (20 percent?). But don't think they have that in place for Algebra yet: End of Course Exams Information Beginning with the 2023-2024 school year, for students entering the ninth grade (Class of 2027), the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment for science and government will count as 20 percent of the student’s final grade in the respective high school level biology and government course. I was trying to see if there was more updated information on which MCAP tests count towards final grades and came across this:
https://marylandpublicschools.org/about/documents/daait/assessment/mcap/eoc-faqs-a.pdf The document was released around November 2025 and only mentions Life Sciences and Government as accounting for part of the final grade in the course: Which courses have an EOC exam requirement? The current COMAR 13A.03.02.06 identifies the following courses as having an EOC exam requirement: High School Life Science (LS MISA) and American Government. Students enrolled in High School Life Science must participate in the MCAP LS MISA. Students enrolled in American Government must participate in the MCAP American Government. How will students meet assessment requirements for graduation beginning in the 2023-2024 school year? Students are still required to meet the graduation assessment requirement by taking the requisite MCAP assessment after earning course credit for Algebra I, English 10, Life Science and Government. In addition, beginning with the first time ninth grade student cohort in SY 2023-2024, students taking Life Science and Government will have the EOC exam account for 20% of their final course grade as required by 13A.03.02 Graduation Requirements for high schools in Maryland. |

Assuming this document is accurate:
https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/siteassets/district/departments/sharedaccountability/testing/ms_assessmenttimeline.pdf Taken from here: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/sharedaccountability/calendar/mstesting/ It looks like the MCAP test window is from April 7 to May 22. So as long as your student is back within that time, the school will likely have them take the test when they return. |
How are you going to get an excused absence for travel? |
OP will probably lie about a death in the family or sickness to get the excused absence. |
OP here. Thanks! |
Nope. Family celebration, not death in the family. |
And your principal will excuse absences for that? Ours will not. Regardless, I'm not sure that it matters whether the absences are excused or not. I think your kid will get disenrolled and will simply have to reenroll when you are ready to send them back. |
