New to the area and house hunting in Fairfax county. I'm trying to learn more about the different areas.
So with the woodson pyramid, Mantua seems to be the neighborhood I hear the most about? Thoughts? Regarding the Mantua ES, which is convenieny tucked in the middle of Mantua. I totally get that ranking is not everything and yes I'm aware most schools in Fairfax is fab.., however I'm just surprised that Mantua ES is "only" ranked 191 per us news. Doesn't deter me from this area, just surprised given how much the neighborhood and the frost-woodson are talked up to me, I would have thought the ES in the heart of this expensive area would be ranked at least in the 100s. Curious why the "lower" ranking or is this simply due to the competition in the area |

The School Quality Report looks pretty good to me.

Yea I saw that too, looked good on paper, therefore was surprised to see it ranked almost 200. Great regardless but I guess I just assumed higher based on all the hype |

Mantua ES is ranked much lower on US News than Canterbury Woods Elementary (#25 in Virginia) and nearly 100 schools lower than nearby Wakefield Forest (#103), also part of Frost-Woodson and not even an AAP Center (which should prob up test scores and rankings theoretically).
Doesn't mean it's not a good school. Just that I wouldn't see that school as being the main reason the Woodson pyramid does well overall. |
| Check out the Wakefield area as well per the elementary school descriptions above. Great pool system (there are 3 or 4) and more sidewalks than Mantua. The traffic getting in and out of Mantua on prosperity is really rough during popular commute hours. |
You can get out of Mantua on Barkley at a light with Route 50. Also, out on Prince William DR. to 236 (Little River Turnpike) but I can't remember if there's a light at that one. My husband's grandparents lived in Mantua but his parent did not grow up there. Not much in the way of sidewalks. Access to the Cross County Trail. Nice pool but I think it has a waitlist and an expensive buy in. My kids swim against them in the Fairfax Developmental League (B meets) We are in different NVSL divisions. |
