Do I need to take tamoxifen?

Anonymous
Diagnosed with benign atypical ductal hyperplasia. Scheduled for a lumpectomy. Over 50 and fully menopausal. Do I need to take tamoxifen? Dr recommends it for everyone but I am concerned about the negative side effects. I don't have cancer so I want to avoid it for now. Anyone do this? Is tamoxifen needed?

My understanding is that the negative side effects of tamoxifen are low (lower?) if you’re already in menopause and definitely lower than AIs which is what is prescribed for post menopausal women after BC treatment. In any case, why not try it first? You can always stop if it becomes too much. Many women apparently don’t have any side effects with it.

Personally, I will be taking tamoxifen after completing active treatment for stage 1 BC. Anything (or maybe almost anything) to reduce recurrence.

What is the risk reduction if you take it?
