Diapers, Wipes, Formulas... Not Free at Inova Fairfax?

Anonymous
Hi,

If you use more diapers, wipes, formulas, pads, and other items the hopital provide you while you are staying there, do they charge more if you take more?

Also, Similacs, Enfamil, and Good Start have coupons for free diaper bags. If I give all three coupons to the hospital, would they give all three? Or just one? I know I won't need all 3 diaper bags, but I do want free stuff that come with the bags

Huh? I am not sure I understand. The post partem nurses usually leave a bunch of diapers with the baby so you can change him/her. If you opt for the baby to be in the nursery then the staff will change the baby as needed.

Same goes for the hemorroid pads/cream, pads, sitz bath, etc. if you have a vaginal delivery- the hospital provides you what you need.

You don't need coupons. If you want you can ask the nurse for a few extra to take with you when you are discharged or take whatever has been left out and not used.

The hospital I delivered at only had the Simila and Enfamil diaper bags. Since there were only 10 of each and there were 15 of us in the maternity wing at the time we were asked to only chose 1 (I chose the one that was more of a backpack style). Again, no coupon needed.

Trust me, after delivery you are going to have lots of other stuff to worry about, not to mention feeling exhausted, happy, and hormonal than fretting over coupons and trying to get all the free goodies.

I delivered at Fairfax. I actually had to be a little proactive to make sure our DD's cart was appropriately stocked with enough diapers, formula, etc. This was more just oversight on their part but happy stocked it up when asked. We also asked if they would give us extra formula to take home and they gave us quite a bit. You do not get to take home the little shirts and swaddling blankets.

We left with many, many freebies. So don't worry about it. These included nasal bulb, diapers, wipes, formula, all the post-partum meds (pads, cremes, stool softener, etc.) and a baby information kit (helpful for first-time moms).

Don't agree with poster 2. Everyone I know has taken pretty everything not nailed down to their PP room (and encouraged me to do the same).

I've never known anyone to clean out their hospital room before leaving.

To the 13:03 poster - they may have taken everything not nailed down but they were not supposed to have done so. It says so all over the room and maternity ward. They were actually quite explicit with what you could and could not take home with you.

The nurses on discharge day encouraged you to take everything else (wipes, diapers, formula in the cart, etc.) But, not the linens. Would you take someone's sheets when you spend the night in their home? That costs the hospitals -and consequently the next patients- money.

Linens? Now that's ridiculous. You know full well no one was talking about linens.
To the op - there will be plenty of formula and some diapers for you to take home. It's not charity your insurance pays. If you're not sure you can ask

I delivered at Fairfax. I left with diapers, wipes, creams, etc -- they told me I could take anything that was in the drawer of the cart. I also left with a bag full of formula. So no need to worry.

I didn't mean linens. And just so we're clear -- there is a lot not nailed down in the room. I didn't literally mean EVERYTHING. Figure of speech. Sheesh.

I actually DO know that people take linens. And the fact that it is posted means the people do take them (per the nurses in the maternity ward). So, it's not so ridiculous.

When I said ridiculous I really meant that the poster would infer that that's what was meant by 'everything that's not nailed down' It was a leap. And an incorrect one as that poster had to clarify that it was a figure of speech. Seemed obvious to me,.

OP here. I didn't mean to cause any trouble. Sorry!

I was just curious about how much supplies I could use at the hospital and take home without feeling guilty. I don't plan to take anything that I'm not supposed to, but if I could take advantage of freebies, I'll do it. You know how expensive diapers and formulas could add up to!

Thanks!!!

The nurse told me when I delivered at the Fair Oaks that once diapers, wipes, bottle nipples, creams, bath brush, etc. leave their stock room they can't be returned so, yes, those items you can leave with.
