Looking at the post here, I can see 5 wining teams, if this is the 5, where is the rest 3?

The other 3 are non-FCPS schools. Nysmith was #2 in Fairfax Chapter, McLean Basis was #3 in Northern VA Chapter |
| The article is wrong. Nysmith took second in chapter, not Rocky Run. |
Nevermind, they had them third. |
|
This is one funny piece of article.....
"Longfellow Middle School: Yeeyung Li, Michelle Lin, Alice Wang, Shunyao Yan; Patti Freeman, coach. (Second)" This team was from two years ago. These four students are sophomores in TJ and McLean HS now. |
|
So, that article is not accurate
I find the official data from their website. |
Looks like they tried to do a cut&paste into an old article template from two years ago and didn't make sure they got everything correct. |
We commented on that when we saw it. The Carson kids are correct but it isn't cool that the Longfellow kids were not properly recognized. |
|
I also wish that they had named all the kids from FCPS going to States. I believe that 30 possible competitors at State for the three chapters in our area, 25 come out of FCPS math programs. Not a bad showing for the kids and the schools.
The Fairfax Chapter is sending four individuals, all from FCPS. Two from Carson, one from Lake Braddock and one from Floris ES. The George Washington Chapter individuals are all from FCPS, with Sangster ES and South County sending an individual. The Northern Virginia Chapter is sending at least one FCPS student as an individual, I think out of Cooper. Basis is sending 2 and H-B Woodlawn in APS is sending 1. |
| I was looking at the results above and noticed that some students qualified for countdown but did not advance to state. Just curious how countdown is determined. |
The countdown takes the top 2 from any school. They also merge the chapters so there is only 1 countdown for the MS. I have mixed feelings on this, I think the countdown practice would be better for the kids who are going to State and might be in the top 12 at State, which is likely to be almost all kids from these three chapters. They only do the top 2 so that more schools get a chance to participate. |
That's a really dumb approach. They should have separate countdowns for each chapter, and it should be the top whatever number of kids, period. Good luck to the kids going to State! The National competition is an incredible experience for the kids who make it. |
I believe that there is one set of questions so they would have to send the kids out for each round and then reuse the questions. The audience is told no photos, no video, no sharing the questions because other Chapters will use the same questions. I think they should take the top 4 kids from each Chapter but that would decrease the number of schools participating. |
Are they holding all 3 chapters in the same location? If so, that's weird. Just have them test in 3 different locations with 3 different countdown rounds. That's what they do pretty much everywhere else. |
