| Our son was diagnosed with ADHD when in kindergarten. Later neuropsych evaluations added low processing and low working memory. He is is college now and continues to struggle. He believes he may also be autistic and would like to get tested. Can anyone recommend someone in Montgomery County or PG County who does autism testing on young adults/adults? We don't want another full neuropsych evaluation (have already done two over the years). He just wants to know for his own knowledge and perhaps receive some therapy or services/accommodations at school that are appropriate. |
| Stixrud does standalone autism testing for adults but they're expensive. |
| For what purpose? If he just wants to understand more about himself, he can explore with a skilled therapist and get an unofficial diagnosis. That's good enough unless he needs additional accommodations. |
Me again, reading more carefully. If he wants accommodations and doesn't currently have any, he will need a full evaluation -- whether a psycho-ed is good enough or he needs a neuropsych will depend on the school. Check with disability services about what documentation they need. |
OP here. He has had accommodations for his adhd, but I think he’s wondering whether there would be different accommodations for autism. I think he’s wondering whether just wants a definitive diagnosis by a professional instead of him just thinking he is. Any suggestions for a therapist for adults that specializes in autism? |

Your college's disability center should be able to recommend testers they consider good and professional. Also, your pediatrician, if he's still seeing one. |
| My son is in college and has autism. He gets an extra time accommodation on exams. I believe that’s it. He sees a therapist privately. I can understand wanting to know, but before spending a lot of money I would explore whether the dx would change anything. |

Not OP, but my son, a young adult at college, is happy that he knows this about himself. |
