Dress Advice

My 16 year old will be performing as a soloist with an orchestra, and needs something on the fancy side to wear for the occasion. The problem is that she's 5' tall and fairly tiny (23" waist). What is a good source for nice but not terribly expensive dresses that would fit the occasion? I'm sure whatever it is will have to be altered, preferably just to hem it, not to entirely redo the thing. I have thought about something along the lines of a prom dress, but what's typically out there for this age group is generally not appropriate (slits, sheer, strapless, etc.).

Is she supposed to wear concert blacks like the rest of the orchestra? What instrument does she play? (Flute or violin will require a lot of mobility in the shoulders, saxophone not as much.)

Macys at Tysons Corner mall had a lot of really nice dresses. I normally don't shop there but I parked in went in that area. I saw a group of young girls looking and they had all different styles. Not just for prom.

She has to wear something distinct from the orchestra, so her normal concert blacks will not work. She plays the violin, so the style of the dress has to work for the instrument.

Must it be a dress? A lot of women violinists wear black satin pants and a colorful blouse.

Soloists generally do not, and DD is definitely not a pants kid. Assuming we can find pants that fit, because that's a whole another minefield.

You're looking for junior bridesmaid.

My daughter has the same height and waist and soloed with an orchestra. I bought a junior bridesmaid dress on Etsy with custom measurements. I believe you can also look at junior bridesmaid dresses on Amazon or other sites, and perhaps you won't even need customization, depending on the seller and the sizes they offer.

The dress has to be long, at least below the knee but usually at the ankle, and most girls prefer straps but sleeveless, with a coat or cardi to keep warm before going on stage, and perhaps handwarmers if your daughter tends to get cold fingers. If your daughter is a violinist, the left shoulder, where the violin rests, must not have any decoration or bumps that cause discomfort.

TJ Maxx. Search “gown” and select her sizes. there are a couple of plain options under $100 in some small sizes that offer full coverage.

What does she play? If piano she needs a shorter dress. If violin she can’t do too crazy of a sleeve

There’s a pink floral Mikado style gown on there I’d personally wear with a thick black bow.

My daughter is a junior bridesmaid in a wedding and I was introduced to Azazie through that endeavor. She tried on a few different dresses and all were nice (quality, style, fit, etc.) - and it appears they have a ton of options. The bride did the ordering and returning so I can't speak to the customer experience, but perhaps worth a look.

I second Azazie. My daughter who is tiny ordered a bridesmaid dress from there. You send your measurements in and they make the dress. Lots of colors and style to choose from and not too expensive.

Look at NY Dress and Couture Candy online and filter by sale/price to find something discounted.
