| DS is interested in studying engineering at mid sized schools where students are studying a variety of interests (including liberal arts) and he could perhaps minor in something outside engineering. He wants a collaborative environment with a social life not focused on fraternities/drinking. Would Carnegie Mellon or case western be good fits? He's also looking at Tufts and University of Rochester. Brown would also be great, but a super high reach. |

I have a son at Case who's majoring in engineering and minoring in musics, so yet it's possible (encouraged, even).
CMU is also a good school for this. They have a major that combines humanities with science (BXA degrees). My current senior applied to this program. He also applied to Rochester and considered Tufts, but ran out of steam lol. |
| I think both would be great, but you have a pretty reachy list. What are the safeties and matches? |
|
Carnegie Mellon is grindy. I see some logical relationship between CMU and CWRU. Also look at Pitt if you are open to those two.
|
My guess is Case and Rochester for matches. Are they any true safeties for engineering? |
| I have a kid majoring in 2 very different things at Case. Very happy. Likes his classes a lot. Has a great social group, is involved in a bunch of things, nothing to do with the frat/Greek scene. It was a great choice for him. |
There are plenty of safeties for engineering. Why would you think otherwise? |
Haven't you posted this before? If he doesn't want a social life focused on fraternities and "drinking' than he doesn't need to join or go to parties. The majority don't. My son is at a Top Engineering school in a fraternity, pledged last fall, and doesn't drink. Go figure! He also can take many electives, if he chooses, that are non-engineering and they can be whatever he wants...business, humanities...whatever and minor in that if that's what his heart desires. Lastly, schools focused on Engineering are all collaborative. They generally consist of students with a common intellect all working on a common goal which a mutual understanding of the difficulty of the curriculum which generally helps breed a strong supportive vibe among the student body. |
| Check out Purdue. Doesn't get the love on DCUM that it deserves. |
Give some examples pls. |
