Switching into business major at JMU

DC is a hs senior who was just accepted into JMU as a communications major.

They are now considering changing their major to business, specifically Marketing.

Anyone have a kid who did this? I saw online that you just need certain grades and to take certain core courses, especially business math courses, but wondering if they somehow restrict the major like at other schools, and if anyone has a kid who has recently done this at JMU and how hard it was.

Business is limited enrollment

You need to go on the website well your kid dies and look up how to change majors and matriculation

Last time I checked your kid needs like a 3.8 in college at JMU to move to the business school.

Limited enrollment program meaning your kid might not get in . Never send a kid to a college like this unless you know for sure they are a great student

Your student will officially designate their desired major during the first year onboarding process. They will apply for admission to the College of Business during their sophomore year.

Your child isn’t bound by whatever major they expressed on their application. They were admitted into the university, not a specific undergrad college. They don’t officially declare until later. So take the business classes and get the required grades, and they can do business.

This is true, but their academic advisor won't be in the Business School. This matters because when DS couldn't get into a business pre-requisite this semester, his advisor sent him an override code to get into the full class. Your DC will be left hanging otherwise.

Advisors aren’t assigned until you declare a major, which you don’t do until after you enroll. The major you indicate on your application doesn’t matter. So the OP’s son can declare business at that time and get an advisor in the business school.

Spots are controlled. They will only have so many spots, so therefore, GPA given in prerequisites is "controlled" in order not to bring-in more students than spots.

What is your source for this? Do you have a kid at JMU? It is different at other schools where there are “restricted” majors. (VT, IU, etc)

NP. My son graduated there last year, he didn't do School of Business he wanted a BS, but yeah that's the case. GPA is the deciding factor when there's only so many spots which there are. they also have to maintain something to stay in. he knew people who couldn't get in and another that couldn't stay in
