Wasn’t planning to get a fence but just got a dog so now thinking to get one. Anything I should know?? Lived in house 13 years so far with no fence. Thx!
I regret not putting one in as I didn't want drama with the neighbors.
Make sure they know to keep the bottom of the fence as flush with the ground as possible so dog can’t escape underneath. Ask for a good fence door latch hardware and a spring closure so your fence door auto closes and doesn’t blow open putting your dog at risk. The better fence companies put the posts deeper into the ground and build the sections piece by piece. The lazier companies slap prefab panels onto the posts.

Quality and price both can vary widely. Get at least 3 quotes.
Detailed quotes that describe what you want -- including low to ground so dog won't escape -- are desirable. If wood, then be certain it is pressure-treated lumber for max termite resistance. Agree with PP (and Robert Frost) about fences and neighbors. Pick a privacy fence to minimize drama, rather than a more open fence. |
Remember the guy in Mending Walls who said "Good Fences make Good Neighbors was a churl - the "old-stone-savage" neighbor. If you want that to be you, go for it! It explains a lot about this place.

No regrets for having a fence once we got a dog. Total game changer and well worth every penny.
As others have mentioned, there’s a huge range in price and workmanship so choose your fence company wisely after talking with several. |
We are giving our two neighbors a heads up, who don’t have fences. We’ve lived here 13 years and we’re on good terms with them and I think they understand that we’re just doing it cause we got this dog.
If it is a small dog, put wire mesh on the bottom and into the ground a few inches so they don't dig out.
Fence + doggy door has made this round of dogs SO much easier than last round.
Dog didn't want to be outside without us.
Make sure you put the fence up a couple of inches inside your property lines. If you put it on the line, then it becomes joint property with your neighbors.
We did this. I have been surprised by how poorly it has aged. Ask about longevity of the wood, posts, etc.
We’ve been very happy with our fence. We got it before getting a puppy. We had a dog before and he was always running away, and this has kept our new dog happy. He is free to run around and it’s great for hosting dog play dates.
Yeah, I know... I am not expecting this to be a miracle cure unfortunately but I hope a little easier than no fence... |
A fence makes good neighbors.
