APS immersion middle school homework

For Those with current middle schoolers, what is your experience with homework?

Kids are supposed to read in Spanish for 20 minutes a day, but this is not tracked at all because english assigns kids 30 minutes of reading and a reading log so adding more homework is viewed as "too much." Sometimes there is homework to study for a SLA test. Sometimes there is homework to study for a science test. I've seen my child have history homework a couple of times, only when they needed to re-do an assignment early this year. Often there are math assignments on the ipad.

Maybe something changed but my kids never had 30 min of English reading even in intensified English at Gunston. They were supposed to read in Spanish but it was not really supported (ie they did not send home specific books that would be discussed in class and there was zero accountability). Basically there was very little homework other than one year in Spanish, but that teach has unfortunately left the school. The math teacher for kids who are taking Algebra in 7th grade assigns some homework but it is very manageable. Overall very little homework so I would suggest signing your kid up for a lot of activities if they will otherwise be on screens and you want to avoid that.

Homework in all of middle school is largely based on how well you use class time.

There are lots of projects in the immersion classes— read a book and do a project; research something and make an oral presentation; memorize something and recite it in class; etc. My kids have/had a reasonable but non-zero amount of homework at Gunston. There is often math homework that isn’t class work— it’s assigned at the end of class to be done at home. And studying for tests— how much is necessary depends on the kid. There is a reading log in English, plus Newselas (read an article and answer questions).

For my kids, the accountability for reading in Spanish came in the form of projects related to them and the teacher meeting with each kid to make sure they are reading and understanding their book (but each kid chooses their own book, at least in 6th grade).
