| I am horrified, DH did this. He is tired of our pup pooping in the house, she’s 7 months old. My neighbor has done this and told my husband to so this. He said it worked on his dog. Has anyone done this, it’s awful way to learn. |
| It’s a common technique. No need to be “horrified” by it. |
|
Ha! Dogs love their own poo, of course it doesn't work. The neighbor is an idiot. What worked for him was probably the angry tone he used to talk to his dog while he was doing it.
You need to watch your dog like a hawk. Tie him to you for several days. Watch his every move, and when you identify the warning signs, like circling and sniffing the ground, you rush outside before he poos. You reward him lavishly with tone of voice, pats and treats, whenever he poos outside. When he has accidents inside, you scold him terribly, but the key to scolding him is to do it IMMEDIATELY, otherwise his dog brain will not link the pooping with the scolding. Which is why you need to watch him like a hawk. If you are not available, the dog needs to be crated in a small enough crate that he's not going to want to soil it. He needs to be crated during the night as well. That's it. The longer you wait and the longer the dog has accidents indoors, the harder it will be to unlearn this behavior. You need to be very persistent. |

Yeah this doesn't work at all.
https://www.gcdogtraining.com/potty-training-dont-rub-their-nose-in-it/ Seriously who doesn't Google dog advice? |
| ^ also disinfect every single area where he's pooped, and use a leave-in enzymatic cleaner once you've cleaned it, otherwise he will try to poo in his usual spots. If he's soiled rugs that are hard to clean, you might have to trash them. |
Yep. That's it. OP, if you're not doing this, you can't be mad at the dog for your failure to train it correctly. All the dog is learning from the "rub his nose in it" approach is that you're angry, and not a very kind leader. |
| All that's going to do is confuse your dog and make it afraid. You will probably need to use crate or umbilical/tether training to house-train your pup. The really important bit in house training is developing the habit of going outside to pee/poop . Your role is to minimize the opportunity to pee/poop indoors and encourage pee/poop outside. That means frequent trips to the yard even in bad weather and constant vigilant attention to your pups needs. |
| This doesn’t work and there’s a good chance your dog eats their poop out of fear of being hurt next time there’s an accident. |
| Is it possible she has stomach troubles? How are the poops? Our pup had a lot of issues with pooping too much because he didn’t tolerate most puppy fooods and when he has to go it was a total emergency. Assuming it’s not a medical problem, this is totally a training problem. Most puppies aren’t doing this past 3 months. |

I have a puppy that age and I know the ice has been really hard for us. Mainly because our pretty reliable yard potty spot has been a nonstarter so I’ve had to go on many more much longer walks to get the poops out.
But I don’t think the nose in thing will work at all. Use a crate/tether. It’s harder on us psychologically to see them in there than it is on them imo. Especially if you’re there, my puppy will sleep in his crate while I work from home once it’s been an hour or so and until I can take him out, but he would definitely sneak off to poop/pee in the house if left to his own devices. |
Our puppy was older when we got him, idk if that’s the case for OP but ime it takes just as long if not longer than if you start with a very young pup. |

Terrible. Couldn't be married to someone like that.
|
Ignorant of how to train dogs, you mean? That makes the overwhelming majority of the posters in this forum unmarryable.
It's not "terrible". It's not effective, but it's a common misunderstanding. You sound really high strung. |
| I strongly recommend you both read a book about puppies. The house training chapter would take like 10 minutes to read. |
No need. A 1 minute internet search will tell you what PPs already did, for free. Tether, constant supervision, crate, rewards for outside poo, nasty tone for inside poo. |
