How is it that South Mountain Creamery has berries that it says are coming from MD or PA at this time of year? Are they grown in hothouses? Or are they just packed in MD/PA? I'm assuming that any environmental advantage to buying local produce is eliminated if they are growing them in hothouses, right?
Why don’t you contact them directly and ask?
It is hothouses.
It's hothouses this time of year, but that doesn't mean all the advantages of local are gone. We are still supporting local small farmers and receiving produce that hasn't already been sitting around in shipping for weeks.
