8th grader struggling in geometry

Anonymous
DD did very well in algebra but has struggled all year to maintain a B in geometry. I'm wondering what she should do for next year. I want her to fully understand the concepts, but I also heard geometry is harder at our high school so I wonder if it will backfire to retake it. Can some kids have a so-so understanding of geometry but still go on to be successful in higher level math? She hates the class (and part of that is the teacher) and just wants to move on to algebra 2.

I struggled with Geometry despite being very good at math generally (math minor in college). She’ll be fine. Let her move on to Algebra 2.

Take it again. She’s already two years ahead.

She will need to know Geometry for the SAT and future classes. She can retake geometry over the summer for a higher grade or take an outside class for Geometry if GPA isn’t a concern. Another option is to find a tutor or a friend that she can study with.

Earning a B in Geometry Honors is not, really, struggling. I understand that it is not an A and I am guessing that she is working hard for that B.

You could look at something like RSM for the rest of the year to help her with Geometry this year but I would not have her repeat the class. I really wouldn't have her repeat the class over the summer. She is doing well in a HS level class as an 8th grader. telling her that she needs to retake a class that she gets a B in is that the only grade that is acceptable is an A. If she is working hard and making her best effort, that is an awful message to send.

Support her current needs. Maybe look for a tutor or a program like RSM to help her. Praise the work she is doing and the effort that she is putting in.

Absolutely. For some strange reason, no doubt to do with how our brains process mathematical concepts, most people are better at algebra vs geometry, or the reverse. I loved geometry and had a difficult time with algebra and calculus (and became a scientist, ha ). My daughter hates geometry and loves algebra and calculus. Most of high school math is algebra based and calculus continues on the same path. There will be some geometrical elements to calculus, so don't completely abandon geometry concepts, please - but most of it is algebraic thinking.

Make sure her algebra is rock solid before she gets to high school, though!

I teach 8th grade Geometry and a B is a solid grade and shoes she is ready for Algebra 2. If As are important, then she should not take honors next year, otherwise she will be fine. 8th grade geometry is a wake up call for honors students - math has come easily for so long and they have to really study and figure out their own best study methods.

This is kinda like my kid. She has an A-, but it’s only because of her tests from the beginning of the year. As of now, her past 5-6 ish quizzes have been 60s, test have been 80s, and the most recent graded one was a 78. I don’t know how she’s pulling through, but she really does not want to expunge it… If I were you, i’d wait until mid-late third quarter to see how it’s going, because there is always the final that can make or break the grade.

Go to algebra 2. A B in honors geometry is a solid grade in honors geometry. She’ll be fine.

If she wants to go to UVA, she will need to take it again and wipe out the B.

I feel like I know which school this in particular this is coming from where kids are getting very low percentages vs the other teacher. I saw a post on this board earlier…

I think if she does well in her math classes taken at HS she will be fine for UVA. I doubt they will look at her and the deciding factor being a B in a math class taken as an 8th grader.

Earning a “B” is hardly struggling! I swear, this sub forum gets more ridiculous and hysterical by the day.

Struggling to maintain a B is different than not trying and getting a B. Math builds on itself so to me that is a red flag. But perhaps Geometry is the one class it would be ok.

She might be working hard to earn that B. And if you have a child where every class has been easy but now they are working hard and managing a B, that feels like a struggle. And with the pressure that people put on their kids to get A's in everything and to be accelerated in math, see the kids taking Geometry int he summer, I can see a kid earning a B as a rude awakening to the kid and family.
