Too fat or normal

Anonymous
DS is 10.5 year old, 75 lbs with 54" tall. He has a belly. Does that mean he is too chubby, need to lose weight or he is about to get growth sprout? He sleeps about 10 hours a day, picky eater, exercise a few times a week. There are zero signs of anything on puberty except some fat around face and overall body. DH says that he is too fat. Is it normal or not? He was skinny and underweight till he was 8/9 years old and he has been eating the same diet. Is he too fat for his height?

This is a normal, healthy weight for that height. BMI is normal. My 8.5 year old is the same height and weight but I wouldn’t describe him as having a belly at all, I know some people distribute weight differently but I can’t imagine him being overweight.

You should talk to your pediatrician, but that sounds normal. Not unusual for kids to put on weight like that before a growth spurt.

It's the doctor's job to tell you this. Not ours.

If his eating habits haven’t changed then it’s the precursor to a growth spurt.

When you eat picky, what does he eat? Typical day?

You’re a monster OP

My 10.5 year old is 55 inches tall, 68 pounds and looks like a skeleton. His BMI is like 8th percentile. I cannot imagine your kid looking fat. Is this a troll?

He's normal. My DS also had a belly at that age, and even chubby cheeks, which is necessary for future growth. My DH also thought DS was too chubby. These are not adults, these are kids whose bodies go through lots of changes. Mine is now 15 and over 6 feet tall slim teenager!

My DD is similar in age and weight, but is shorter... she's not fat, a tad "fluffy" though she is in sports so has muscle.

WTAF, I'm pretty sure OP is a human being. What is actually WRONG with you?

I would focus on making sure his nutrition is good. That’s way more important than being skinny or fat. Make sure he’s getting enough protein and vegetables.

and talk about health in general, not being fat or skinny

It's perfectly fine to talk about fat and skinny. Don't dance around these things. Being fat is a suboptimal way to go through life and is frowned upon by society. You don't want him to suffer from poor self-esteem. Ignore these people who say you should ignore the obvious.

Seriously. Why would you trust the judgmental vultures on DCUM with your child’s well-being?

Especially over the opinion of a trained professional who actually knows them and has access to all their health data.

My DS just turned 10 and is 75 pounds and 58 inches tall, but he is very tall and skinny. He honestly looks a little too skinny to me for his height but the doctor wasn’t concerned and he eats well. What does the doctor say? That should guide you, not other people because there is such variation in kids’ sizes and shapes. Many kids put on weight before a growth spurt.
