DS had to switch out of Algebra 2 honors into regular Algebra 2. His tutor said that DS is able to follow instructions to solve problems, but in Honors, everytime a test question had some "twist" to it, he would not figure it out. He had a C-/D+ in Algebra 2 Honors and now he's getting As in the regular class.
Which math do non-mathematically minded kids take after Algebra 2 (Junior year.). He said his only option was Precalc DE. He said he heard from his friends that Statistics was really hard. How hard is Precalc DE? |
|
What are the math options at his school? Look at those. I would guess that there is something that is not AP or Calc based, applied stats maybe?
|
|
What are the options? Is he a current junior or going to be a junior?
--math teacher |
| My now-junior is taking AP Pre Calculus. He took regular Algebra 2 last year and did not enjoy the classroom environment. |
| there is a new course in the county called data science. |
| Please copy and paste what you wrote and send it to his teachers. They know him much better than strangers on the internet. |
|
You know, that's a good idea to email his teacher. I will do that.
But to answer the questions above, DS is currently a sophomore, so this is for junior year. The options in the course catalog are: Alg Func Data Analysis AP Precalculus AB AP Precalculus BC Precalculus w/ Trig DE Trigonometry/Prob & Statistics Data Science AP Statistics |
| FCPS math teacher here. I think he should take AP Precalc AB. If he is easily getting As in regular Algebra 2, then this is the way to go. I am assuming he is college-bound? |
Another math teacher here and I agree. It’s still best to ask his teacher, who knows him best. |
They could do statistics |
Third math teacher, agreeing. |

Whats covered in data science? They didn’t have that when I was a kid
__ Data Scientist |
| I like the idea of asking their teacher. I also think while you are in school - take chances and learn things that may not get an A. Math is the language of the universe. Not for grades - for them. To grasp some element of it. I know we play all sorts of games for college apps but I’ve bee there and done that - when it comes to math- keep going as long as you can. |
| I think I have a similar kid OP. Do you mind me asking what his grades were in Alg 1 and Geo, and were they honors courses? This is helpful for my daughter also. |

My DS (now a college graduate) took AP Statistics.
Funny, now he is really into investments and interest on mortgages, etc. However, his job is not especially math related. His wife was a Business major, but he handles the bills. Go figure. Hated, hated math, but he is quite intelligent. |
