Iceland - Single Mom - Car Rental + Drive to Sites

Anonymous
Hello fellow travellers!
I will be bringing my 2 teens to iceland for 2 days en route to europe. My PREFERENCE is to stay outside Reykjavik at a special feeling cabin-type hotel where we can see the northern lights, and then get to an ice caving adventure (pref vatnajokull - at least the photos on line look most amazing at this location!) and to a thermal spa/bath (not necessarily Blue Lagoon). Do we need to rent a car? If so, how difficult is the driving in late march? Anything to watch out for? i understand that it would probably be so much easier to simply stay in Reykjavik and sign up for a bus excursion to Golden Circle etc, but....
Advice welcome! Thank you!

I went in the summer, so I can’t speak to driving in march. For the spa, there’s a new lagoon open now on the golden circle that looks really nice called Laugarás Lagoon. We did the Blue Lagoon the first day after we landed, which is touristy but still really beautiful and fun. Plus you get to drive through the recent lava fields. That was cool. Sky Lagoon in Reykjavik is also really popular, so lots of people, but very nice.

I went in winter and found driving to be fine. I would definitely rent a car, it makes everything much easier if you are not staying in Rekjavik.

You need to rent a car. There is no public transportation. Late March might be all roads covered with ice and snow, so be careful. Some tourists have accidents. Just be careful while driving if you are not used to handling a car in the winter. Iceland is so beautiful - enjoy!

My suggestion is to make sure you are used to boring driving and staying awake. We drove around and to be honest I got so sleepy and that never happens to me. So just be careful.

Forgot to add pay attention to the speed limits. They ticket and you have to pay.
