It’s full for this semester. It’s unclear how quickly it fills up. For kids who can’t attend every summer health synchronous class or want a free option, this would be great. However, I’m worried about trying on this option as we weren’t told about it before. Should we assume they will keep offering 2 different days of the week as an option? And when should we start looking for registration to open? If they are all full, why can’t MCPS offer more options? |
| Oh, this is great but I'm a little confused by the fact that I'm hearing about it from DCUM rather than from MCPS. |
| You need to make summer work if its important to you. |
My kids did it last year. I registered and he was placed in one of the days (Tues or Wed). He had to attend the zoom sessions in the evenings. It was a 6 week course. It moves fast. I can't imagine how fast summer moves. The content is not hard but there are a lot of research projects that just take time. It's hard to do that in a fast paced schedule. But in general, as soon as registration opens, register. You can always unenroll is something changes. It will fill up fast. |

This has existed for several years. If you are in a situation where you likely need to take health as an evening class during the school year your counselor will tell you about it. For example high performing kids who are in band are often desperate to make space in their schedule.
My kid took heath in the evening during the school year last year to wrap up the health requirement before they started the Early College program. It isn’t a secret but I think they have limited space so the counselors don’t publicize it except to kids who likely will need it. |

I have been wondering about this as I have a music kid in 9th who wanted to do summer school. Unfortunately with summer school running mid week to mid week, it interferes with a camp they usually do. They hope to eventually do health and computer science outside of school so they can keep up their music and foreign language classes.
I was trying to figure out if they could take it at Montgomery College instead, but that information doesn't seem easy to find (if it's even possible). |
| My kid did it for Health B over this past winter; they heard about it from a classmate and their counselor okayed it. It began in early December and ended in late January. A great way to knock out the requirement without using summer school (which my did did for Health A), and unlike summer school, it's free. Highly recommend. But I think space is pretty limited and it's definitely not well-advertised. |
Shoot! I wish I had known about a Dec start. That would have been perfect. |
My kid is a performing arts kid at Einstein. Counselor initially told my kid no to summer school. I had to email twice to finally get info about any options outside of the school day. Counselor still didn’t share when or how to register for summer or the school year option. Kid would have to miss every Wednesday in the summer for swim meets. |
