Deferral to top 5 LACs

If your unhooked kid was deferred to one of the top lacs, did RD acceptance ever happen to them? I am asking because nowadays massive deferrals have become very common, and lacs are not immune to it. The question is about both ED1 and ED2.

I saw deferred kids accepted in RD to Pomona, Amherst and Bowdoin. This is class of 2029.

Williams and Amherst at our private.

I’d search on Reddit for historical data.

Amherst. Deferred ED1 and then admitted. Top grades at a tough private but no hooks. Denied outright at all 5 Ivies they applied to during RD.

Why would any school defer with no possibility of admittance?

The Military Academies are typically "ranked" in the top 5 - I have seen this happen although I know someone who was denied and later admitted to Army Prep

Every school handles deferrals differently, and the situation changes every year, very much depending on how they shape the class.

Vandy in at least one recent year took a lot of deferrals in RD.
USC defers everyone, and takes a lot of deferrals in RD. Many of deferral acceptance are Spring enrollment.
Georgetown accepts 10-15% from their deferral. They don't reject anyone in EA.
MIT defers 80% of EA applicants, but don't take many from the deferrals. I guess you could say the possibility of admittance is very low.

Liberal arts colleges have not published their deferral data. It's highly unpredictable. The schools are very small, I expect large variations from year to year. I wouldn't get my hopes up.

It can mean the school likes the application, but it's one of a number in a similar "category." The committee is open to accepting the applicant but also open to a stronger app in the same category coming in during RD. Or just ideally looking for more in a different category.

DD was deferred at Swat and then accepted RD (2022).

Reddit has a lot of international students. Looking for domestic data. Bowdoin ED2 deferred.

The military academies are not remotely top 5 based on the academic accomplishments of their admits. They are very good but not top 5. But, the qualities that they develop result in graduates who tend to significantly out perform.

Class of 2028, Williams accepted 14 deferred students out of ~155. Acceptance rate is ~10%.

I don't know, but I saw a lot of kids last year and this year who were deferred at WASP and did ED 2 to Vassar or Wes (etc) and get in.

I think this is a big mistake. These kids would have gotten into Vassar or Wes RD. And may have gotten into WASP RD. There are some "panic" ED2 scenarios I see - usually in this WASP to step-down LAC move. Come April, these are the kids who are second guessing IME.

Unless Vassar is truly your second choice, dont do it.

Everyone knows ED preys on panic and insecurity. What's new?

Under "Decisions and Decision Release":
Bowdoin says "Many applications with the defer decision are admitted in RD."
The question is what is "many".
