I have a middle-school boy who is interested in fashion design and theatrical costuming. He's interested in finding a summer camp that teaches related skills, like how to draw clothing, how to do clothing alterations, and making clothing based on a pattern.
He has basic fiber arts skills -- he can hand-sew, use a sewing machine, knit, needle-felt, crochet, and weave (on a loom) -- at the level that kids get from elementary-summer-camp week-long projects. Ideally, there would be other boys in the class, but he can cope with all girls if he has to. I have zero skills in this area -- I've never been taught to so much as sew a button -- so I'm completely clueless. Any recommendations? Pretty open to location, but MoCo, Fairfax County, NWDC strongly preferred. (Arlington is probably OK.) |

The finishing school camp seems to be very individual. Kids pick a project and have a teacher who helps them along. |

Creative Arts in Bethesda will give him real
Sewing skills. But their summer camps go through age 12 so he might be too old for camp. The classes might work for him, but it could take time to get the skills to create his own patterns, work with difficult fabrics. |
| Creative Arts. But, if interested in fashion, learning yo sew is the priority. |
| Creative Arts is a great place to start. |
| Sibley has a summer fashion design camp. |
| My DS does Traveling Players and his friend there is in their technical theatre program that involves costuming/sewing |

Sidwell has this, also Three Little Birds in Hyattsville if not too far.
There really should be more sewing programs for boys! |
| My 9 y.o. DS did the Sidwell Summer Sewing Camp. He was the only boy there, but he enjoyed it. |
