K-8 -> public high school age cutoffs

So my October-birthday kid is currently a young 5th grader in public school, but one of the K-8s we applied to just gave us a phone call indicating they'd be very interested in taking him, but having him repeat 5th so he'd be the same age as his classmates.

We're not totally opposed to the idea, but our worry is how this would interact with NYC's public school age cutoffs when it's time for high school, if we decide on a specialized high school instead of private.

I know that for public kindergarten the age cutoffs are very strict and your child has to start kindergarten the calendar year they turn 5, but does anybody know how this works in older grades? Would he be able to sit for the SHSAT as an old 8th grader and start at Stuy or wherever as an old 9th grader, or would they insist that he take the 9th grade test / start in 10th?

I don’t think it has any impact for high school. He would go through the same 8th grade process. Different school systems have different age cut-off. They’re not going to make you skip an entire grade of high school.

I would repeat. It’s a gift even if you switch back to public - you won’t be forced to skip a grade at that point.

My kid went to a public elementary school and had a number of older classmates who moved here from elsewhere after kindergarten and were allowed to be in the grade they would have been in at their prior school (i.e. he has a friend who was born in October of the prior year). So your child would have no problem. DOE is only rigid for kids entering K.

I believe he would have to take the SHSAT as an 8th grader and start at Stuy as an old man of 14 . It's for the better, trust me.
