What does it take to get likely letters?

What are the profile of a student that receives likely letters?

First Gen, URM. The regular strong candidate will not get them. They are for the type of students they need to meet certain numbers in a class.

They are Black.

I suppose there are all kinds of profiles - PPs are being very weird.

My white-Asian middle class kid from MD received a likely letter from W&M for their dual degree programme with St Andrews, in International Affairs. He had written their extra essay and submitted the application on the last day possible, and had not visited as a high schooler (but did mention a Model UN visit in middle school). It was nice to get the nod, although he picked GWU instead.

For the most part, this is the correct answer.

I also got the impression OP was asking about Yale, even though she didn’t say that explicitly.

PP you replied to. And where did you mention that in your OP? Likely letters are sent by many colleges.

And why would anyone think that likely letters are the sole province of Yale? You're rude.

DC got a likely letter from a HYPSM + another Ivy. One of the letters made it clear that it does not mean the child is "more qualified" than other admits. They just emphasized that they really want DC to accept their offer or something to that effect.

We are not a minority or low income or have any hooks.

Well duh!

Be a kid of a big donor of course or a great athlete they want

But I guess you just what to put down a few black students Yale takes.

Instead of focusing on the majority of who get those letters. But I'll bet you think they "earned" them

When do likely letters from Ivys go out?

No one responding on this thread has any idea, OP. it’s just another place to grind their axe.

The number of people who know someone who received a likely letter from a particular school is very small. The number of people who know two recipients is even smaller. You really think they’re posting here and if so that their experience is worth anything?
