The Harp on 12th St NE is new and good (RIP Brookland's Finest) for eating and drinking.

Hitching Post on Upshur NW is an excellent standby.

Many Asian restaurants.

For small local chains that I don't really consider chain chains, Teaism and Busboys and Poets each have real plates and silverware and some delicious items.
