If your kid’s first choice is UMD CS

Can you list another LEP as a second choice?

If your kid got into the university but not into CS, what did they do?

No, i don't think so.

Nowadays cs is virtually impossible to transfer into. Business is also tough, though not impossible. . Other LEPs are accessible by completing some reasonable prerequisites.

If dead set on cs, go elsewhere or do info sci or maybe CE.

Does it mean that UMD may put you in another major although you applied for CS? Any random major?

OP here:

My understanding is that you can list a second choice major, and if that major isn't an LEP, they'll put you there. My question is if you can list a major that is also an LEP. So, for example, could a kid list CS as first choice, and then list Accounting as second choice?

If your kid doesn't get into either of the majors they listed, or only listed CS and didn't get in, then they get put in Letters and Sciences as an undecided major, and can pick any of the majors that aren't LEP. Or they can apply again for an LEP, that isn't CS.

Someone with more experience can correct me if I'm wrong about the second part.

Double check but it could be they put students into Letters and Sciences (undecided?).

They put you in L&S, and you can try for any other major other than CS.

There is a *TINY* chance you could transfer to CS from L&S, but it's a tiny chance. There are only 100 spots for both internal and external transfers.

If your child is set on CS and is searching for additional application opportunities, UT-Dallas is a very good CS school and is still accepting applications I think until May - I realize not UMD but just to have in your back pocket in case CS does not pan out somewhere else. Also, transferring FROM a CS program to another school may be easier (but I do NOT know that for sure). I think very difficult to go from non-CS to direct admit within most schools.

Yes, but if you don’t get into that second choice, you will likely be rejected from UMD. You took your shot and missed, so they’re not handholding to get you into another major.

OP here,

My kid isn't a senior yet. We are looking at a variety of schools, but he really likes UMD. Thanks for the UT Dallas suggestion.

He's not set on CS, he's got a couple majors he's interested in. But he knows that if he wants CS to be an option he needs to be admitted to it as a freshman. So, his thought is he'd apply to CS with a second choice as a backup.

How do students end up in general "Letters and Sciences" if they don't accept students who don't get into their choices?

I thought that they first decided if someone is accepted, and then the LEP's decide whether they are admitted to the program.

They review without major, then send the pool to the LEP for review. That doesn’t mean they’re accepted yet, just that they have the stats to be considered. If the student is denied from two LEPs, AOs are not going to bother looking at the application again—other students are filling up Letters and Sciences in the meantime.

Are you basing this on experience or guessing?

I heard it from admissions.
