Blocking sites at work?

Anonymous
Does your work allow you to block websites at work or set limits? I've struggled with staying focused since being back in the office full time, but everything is blocked (ironic). I can't add 3rd party blocking controls and Chrome doesn't let us add websites to be blocked. My employee also has requested this. I've googled and can't find a way around this since I don't have admin rights. My employee is a high performer.

Our IT is worthless at helping us, so we're wondering what's the norm in other organizations.

Blocks are done by the employer for the management of the business, not by employees. Ask your CIO to add category blocks which you think are needed, e.g., shopping site or whewrever you're finidng yourself becoming distracted. Or, focus on self-control instead of control externally imposed on you, which you may later regret.

You could do this yourself by editing the hosts file on your computer, if you have access to do that.

Lol no, but my work blocks such random stuff. I wanted to look up a restaurant menu, that happens to be attached to a casino. Work cpu blocked the link for "gambling" sheesh. Meanwhile Fb and reddit still work.

Are you using your company issued pc for personal searches? Don’t.

Your post makes no sense.

+1. "Everything is blocked" but I guess OP wants more things to be blocked? I don't understand.

Probably means OP doesn't have high enough privileges (is blocked) from adding things to a blacklist (blocking things herself) or conversely creating a whitelist where only sanctioned items are accessed.

Sounds like something that can be solved with a little self discipline.

With a work laptop or desktop, so much is managed centrally that likely no local tweaks will have any effect.

I have never had to address this, so I am not sure what our organization would do.

However, I'd be hesitant to go to IT with this, since you're essentially confessing that you have a problem with staying on track at work, and have used their computing resources for a lot of non-work stuff.

There's definitely a risk there.

What is your question? Do you think it’s blocked at the computer level?! Lol.

It’s blocked at the firewall. You will have to submit a firewall request to unblock.

Or you know, you can use your home computer to surf p**n

Op here. We’d like for sites to be blocked that are distracting. I cannot block them myself. Like dcum or reddit. The only thing that is blocked for me are admin level controls. Obviously not porn.

And sure, willpower could help.
