My wife’s 2023 has not left house since Saturday, my other 2022 car in garage. My 2012 GMC SUV has been in snow and salt all week. It also does drop offs all kids stuff college, drives into DC parking lots.
New cars don’t want scratched in parking lot, dragging crap to college or driving on icy roads as afraid they get damaged. So what is point of them? |

First, new cars become old cars.
Second, not all of us have space or finances to keep a junker running and insured like you. I had a 2010 until last year when someone rammed me. I loved having a car I basically could drive like a demolition derby. But used car prices are broken, so new cars are pretty much the better value. Buying an old junker from someone usually ends in a money pit unless you know them and their car maintenance regime. |

Agree. Two very old cars over here.
I refuse to pay any more "personal property tax" anymore. I also won't lease because you still have to pay personal property tax on leased cars! It's NOT even yours but you still have to pay? No thanks. |

My DH's car is over 20 years old and my Forrester is 9 years old. But they were new when we bought them. I insisted on a new car when I bought my Subaru mainly because I had always bought used cars before and just felt like I wanted a new one. I'm glad I did, because for whatever psychological reason, it still feels special and new to me, even though it clearly is not.
But yeah, agree with the PPs concern about property tax. |
| We like buying 2-4 year old cars with low miles. Otherwise, the steep depreciation is hardly worth it. |

Tried to buy a used car two years ago. It was exactly $1k less than a new version of the same car. Guess what I bought?
And I tend to drive my cars for at least 10-15 years, so yeah, I also prefer having a older car I’m not afraid to actually use. |

My cars are 20 and 15 years old. When they die, I will buy new cars, which, for a while, I won't want to scratch or dent, until they end up scratched and dented anyway, and then I won't care.
Cycle of life. |
| When are they going to get rid of the personal property tax. Enoughs, enough. |
"They" can't. The money is needed. |

Yes, my 2-seater sports car has not left the garage all week... because it's a sports car and doesn't have much ground clearance and would perform horribly in snow since it's not designed for that.
Instead, I've been driving our other vehicle with a higher ground clearance. Should I send the sports car to the junkyard once the snow is gone and I'm able to drive it there? |
