| The deadline for 1st round winners to accept/deny their spots is due 1/26 so second round lottery should begin anytime now... |
Given that it's been code red all week, I doubt they will run the next round of the lottery until next week. |
DC is in both STEM and Humanity pool but did not get in the first round. So far nothing for the 2nd round if they have done anything yet.
|
|
Central Office staff have had the whole week off so I wouldn't expect anything until next week.
(If it bothers you that MCPS won't even require telework-eligible staff to work a single day this week, let MCPS and/or the board know!) |
Nothing get. Waitlist on both pools.
|
| My kid got a spot in one and still in the pool for the other in Round 1. Every single family we know that did get a spot in either magnet turned it down. So there should be a lot of folks getting spots whenever around 2 comes out |
|
They extended the deadline of Round 1 to today, 2/4.
I don't know of anyone that has accepted a spot at our school (including us) so lots of spots should be opening up. |
| Why are people choosing not to accept that the spots? |
The quality of MS magnet programs have dropped significantly after the lottery was implemented in the past few years, plus the increase of local school enrichment/advanced courses offering makes the so called 'magnet' program much less appealing...
|
If you think local schools are actually doing enrichment, you are mistaken. What a joke. There is NO comparison. -Signed a parent with one kid that won a spot in a magnet and another who was eligible it did not. |
Actually they do. Now the accelerated math (pre-algebra at 6th grade) is equivalent to Magnet math. HIGH is an advanced humanity class. Some schools offer coding and game design at 6th grade and almost all school has Foundations of Computer Science as 8th grade elective (as high school credit). Kids will not miss much.
|
| I can't speak for the math/science/comp sci magnet but the humanities magnet at Eastern is head and shoulders above any other middle school's "advanced" humanities curriculum. You'd know this if you had a kid there! Honestly, it's quite difficult and there is a LOT of homework, so kids who can't cut it probably *should* turn it down (that and it may be a long bus ride depending on where you live). |
| I was told that they don't do the second round until after the deadline to accept and appeals are completed. If your appeal is granted you are added to the wait pool- so it makes sense that they wait. |
Do you know about Project Success at Sligo and White Oak? Appealing to me as it’s going back to the original middle school philosophy. We are actually running junior high schools versus middle schools. https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/whiteoakms/departments/projectsuccess/ |
My DC is currently in both wait pool but nothing came to our email yet.
