MSDE just today approved allowing districts to use Presidents Day as a makeup day. Will MCPS use it? It would be so much better, both for kids' education and for convenience, than just adding useless days at the end of June, and doesn't take away any teacher work days or step on any toes around observing holidays.
https://marylandpublicschools.org/stateboard/documents/2026/0127/calendar-modification--granting-authority-to-the-state-superintendent-a.pdf "Background Education Article §7-103 requires schools to be open for student attendance for 180 days and closed on the following public school holidays: Thanksgiving Day and the day after; Christmas Eve and from then through January 1; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day; Presidents’ Day; the Friday before Easter and from then through the Monday after Easter; Memorial Day; and primary and general election days. Subsection (b) (iv) provides the State Board the authority to permit schools to open on holidays if normal school attendance is prevented because of natural disaster, civil disaster, or severe weather conditions. Executive Summary Weather conditions in January and February can be unpredictable. Granting authority to the State Superintendent of Schools to approve requests received from local school systems to open schools on February 16, 2026, Presidents’ Day, will provide local school systems the flexibility to make calendar modifications and recover instructional time, if needed. Action It is being requested that the Maryland State Board of Education grant the State Superintendent of Schools authority to approve, upon request of a local board of education, flexibility for local school systems to open for pupil attendance on February 16, 2026, Presidents’ Day, as an inclement weather make-up day, if needed, for the 2025-2026 school year." |

But there are two days off that week. Presidents’ Day and Tuesday is also a day off for teacher development or something.
So McPS is going to use both of them to get back the snow days? |
| We already have plans to be out of town that weekend. Oh well. |
| McPS is such chaos. Can’t they just add in more than one snow day like a normal school district. Add in 3-4 and then people can plan for them |
| Yeah. If they do that I'll be putting in for a sub because I'm going out of town that weekend. |
| I doubt it. They don't move nearly quickly enough. |
| No, way too soon for that. |
Tuesday is Lunar new year. If you want to respect religious holidays, you should respect lunar new year too. |
Agreed. If they use Lunar New Year then Easter Monday and Good Friday should be on the table for use as well. |
They do, that's why it wasn't marked as a designated makeup day. |
That's just idiotic. We will need to make up 5 snow days by then probably at the rate this winter is going, and kids will be asked to come in Monday and not Tuesday. |
Asians didn't lobby much for Lunar New Year as a day off. Teachers lobbied hard for additional teacher development days/grading days to be added into the schedule, and it was easier to add those in if you could say a certain ethnic group or religion was asking for additional days off to be on par with the Christians and the Jews. |
| Im traveling that weekend so will have to get a sub if they make it a school day |
And then MCPS will say they can't open school because not enough staff...just like these snow days. Or they could act more responsibly and add snow days to the calendar like a normal school district. |
Feb 17 is not a professional development or grading day. There's no school for students and teachers. |
