This might sound like a dumb question, but does do pipes ever burst at your main water shutoff?
I know everyone says to be mindful exterior pipes (spigots, sinks along outside walls) but what about the pipes leading to your main water shutoff? Obviously (or at least in most cases) that's along an exterior wall. The pipe that carries that water in is underground, but is that a much lesser concern? |
| It’s usually less of a concern because the ground doesn’t freeze in DC. |
| As long as it is buried at or below the frost line, it shouldn't freeze and burst. |
| They are under ground, it's not as cold. |
| Water comes into your home below the frost line, usually at least three feet down so that this doesn't happen. If you have a freezing cold crawl space, it can happen. |

I've seen it happen with my own eyes.
Plumbers in DC tend to take not nearly enough care to avoid freezing pipes. Burying pipes deep enough is a lot of work, if they can get away with it they'll skip that work. |
| Idk but at least that would only flood my basement. |
