Something in between rec and travel

Anonymous
Both of my kids love playing basketball but as a family we cannot commit to travel soccer (single parent no help). They want something more competative than rec? We are in Chantilly but willing to travel. Does something like this exist?
13 year old girl and a 10 year old boy.

In my area, both middle school and high school have basketball teams. At the high school level, there is JV and varsity.

Basketball or soccer (you mentioned both)

During Winter: FCYBL Winter League. It's called winter travel/county/select depending where you live.

During Spring: Since you live in Chantilly, look into CYA and SYA spring travel teams. They should post spring tryout/open gyms very soon. They usually play in local tournaments within a 30 minute drive.

I apologize looking for basketball.
I was looking at soccer for my son at the same time and wrote in the wrong sport.

For basketball I would add training at Evolution.
For soccer class at HP elite,
Same training place and if you miss a class no one is counting on you like on a team.

Another thought- perhaps you can get a carpool situation going so your kids can play travel sports. No better teacher than the game. Best of luck

Something in between rec and travel is the holy grail, and unfortunately hard to find!

I agree that it seems like FCYBL might fit the bill - some of the teams call this travel, but they just travel around NOVA as opposed to their in-house rec leagues that are all much more local. Keep an eye on that for tryouts next fall.

(For soccer, Arlington ADP is a great program, and it sounds like Montgomery County has a similar program - MSI.)

Some CYO (Catholic schools and parishes) can have pretty good leagues and teams. The Washington Archdiocese Mid-Atlantic League has some great players.

Willie Diggs sounds taylor made.

In Montgomery County you'd be looking at MSI Classic for soccer. I am not sure who does similar in VA, but look for something called "select soccer."

Many organizations have teams that play in local leagues and don't travel. Go to shots up basketball league and look at the teams that have played there last season and that will give you a list of teams to check out. There are many options in this area.
I'm more familiar with the Maryland teams otherwise I would name a few.

Please name a few Maryland teams for house leagues something better than rec but not travel.

My 10yo is on a Select team in Loudoun through our rec league. There are CYA and DYS teams. They play Sunday games in Aldie/Chantilly, concurrent with the regular rec season. Not sure how the other leagues choose the players, but for us it was invite-only to a tryout based on performance at evaluations.

the Shots Up League in the fall stays pretty local, so find a team that plays there. Most games are at The St. James. I believe a lot of the VA teams (eg Fairfax) play there. The MADE Hoops circuit has more travel down to places like Virginia Beach, so best to avoid that circuit.
