Did an egg retrieval today and only got 4 eggs. It’s looking like multiple cycles could be on the horizon. I’ve been googling whether there is a relationship between repeat IVF cycles and cancer, but haven’t found anything definitive. Some anecdotal stories, but on a population scale it doesn’t look like it’s proven. Thoughts? (Obviously I’m hoping this cycle works out and we don’t need another one, but just wanted to crowdsource any health risks associated with IVF).
I asked Dr Davis at Cornell in NYC this about 5 years ago and he said there is no evidence to suggest that the evidence does not provide for a connection between IVF and ovarian cancer. I have had something like 12 retrievals so obviously concerned. I'm in early 50s now and ask my gynocologist to do a transvaginal u/s every year or two to make sure nothing is happening there.
I did 4 IVF cycles 19 years ago and was just diagnosed with ovarian cancer. My oncologist says no correlation has ever been found between IVF and ovarian cancer. In fact, I think he said no correlation between IVF and any type of reproductive cancer has been established. I also don’t have the genetic mutations that carry increased risk. Just bad luck.
