How is Kumon for reading comp?

Asking for 2nd and 3rd grade. Would putting DC in Kumon or Sylvan for the summer help with reading comprehension? Can read well and understand in conversation, but cannot seem to answer questions on a written test.

Have you tried the checking if she understands what the question is asking? Write a few simple and then more complex questions about her day and her life and have her write our answers. Could be that. If she can discuss what she read with you, she's ok with the reading. Putting thoughts on paper concretely is another skill.

My brothers's kids were good readers in terms of knowing words, phonics, and what not. They benefited from Kumon's early elementary reading program for a year or two, once or twice each week.

I am not sure whether it was just more practice with answering questions, or techniques they taught, or exactly what made the difference. Anyway, it did help them improve reading comprehension and their ability to answer questions and their ability to explain reading passages.

Reading comprehension questions are multiple choice or "in order of" question. It's not a writing issue. I think she needs more practice with the format and practice with answering these types of questions. There's no problem reading and then chatting with the teacher or me about what happened, what the character is thinking, etc.
