Savory, quick breakfasts - not eggs?

Anonymous
I think we're feeding our DS breakfasts that are way too sugary and carb heavy. At parent's day, we saw the sugar crash set in by mid-morning. Any ideas out there for quick, low-sugar, savory breakfasts. Particularly ones that don't involve eggs? No allergies; DS just hates them & I'm not up for that battle so early in the morning.

Thank you!!

I don't know how old your kids are--but yogurt and meusli and a couple of pieces of microwaved turkey or beef sausage are a staple breakfast for our 3 kids 9-11.

They've been eating this breffie w/the occasional egg thrown in since they ever had solid food! Oldest DS is Aspie and the other has celiac so we can't do gluten. High protein has really helped our Aspie DS with severe ADD issues --he has no ability to stop himself eating carbs (will eat spaghetti until he vomits) but is incredibly calm with a high protein breakfast. You can balance in the carbs in the pm hours.

cinnamon raisin oatmeal with toasted walnuts; waffles with peanut butter; yogurt with muesli/slivered almonds/fruit/jam.

Soup, ham sandwich, fried rice--doesn't have to be "breakfast" food.

Oatmeal is always good, and its so easy to make from scratch then you can dress it up from there. It's high fiber and filling so it lasts a while.

Wholegrain toast with peanut butter is good too, but depending on the kid it may not last very long. Maybe have that plus some fruit or something with more fiber to make it last longer (you can do a banana, sliced apples, etc)

What about breakfast sandwiches? You could make a toasted english muffin with ham and cheese (or turkey, etc)

My kids love grilled cheese sandwiches on whole wheat.

Cream cheese on whole wheat bagels is always a hit at our house. Or heck - just some cut up string cheese and a little turkey lunch meat.

I've been making grilled cheese with ham in the middle for my 11 YO.

Agree with PP about not needing "breakfasty" types of food in the am. How about bean and cheese burritos? Leftover pizza? Like the grilled cheese and ham idea above.

Warm cereals of all kinds are great--we especially like the ones by Bob's Red Mill. We serve with milk, and sometimes plain yogurt also. You can sweeten with honey, applesauce, jam if you like.

Crepes filled with fresh fruit and peanut butter.

OP here - thank you everyone - some great ideas here!

Bacon sandwich. Cream cheese and smoked salmon bagels. I often serve DS cold TJ's chicken sausage from the night before with toast and some fruit. Baked beans on toast - sounds yucky but is actually very good.

yogurt & fruit.
whole wheat mini bagel with PB or soy butter
smoked salmon (prefers it separate from the bagel & cream cheese)
creamed herring (high in omega 3s and calcium, low in heavy metals; my DC loves it)
