| I have a stash of old coins given to me over the years. Probably a total of 100 coins, a mix of Morgan silver dollars up to 1964 Kennedy half dollars. I know there is value. How can I get rid of them easily and for the most amount? I thought about eBay but seems like scams are common. Do coin shops offer good prices? Anyone here who has sold coins before who can suggest what to do or not to do? |
I have done a bunch of my own research to determine what my coins may be worth. At the most basic level, you know the silver content of any nickel, dime, quarter, 1/2 dollar, dollar from 1964 and previous, so you can add up the ounces and multiply by $90 (or whatever silver is it). I have a ton of Morgan silver dollars and all kinds from the 1800s...unfortunately, many of those are only worth their silver content as they aren't very rare. The value is usually most dependent on a specific mint, only minting a small amount of a certain coin. I have a dime worth like $3,000 for this reason. My suggestion is do some research and determine if you think any of your coins are worth more than your silver content. Then try to get some referrals to some shops and just take that one coin to a shop and see what they offer you. If you get the sense the shop wants to just buy your coin for the silver content (or worse, less than the silver content)...and doesn't even spend anytime determining if it is more valuable than that, then you move along. Hopefully, one of your referrals comes across as an honest dealer. |
