How many As?

Anonymous
I always read people complain that their elite high schools don't give out enough As. What is the percentage of As that people expect from a math or English core class, like in Big 3, Big 5? In College, kids are so unhappy about not getting an A when they are clearly not deserving. I am curious what the expectation is here? Maybe public school sgive out half of the class A? What about private schools? In our view, A means outstanding/excellent. Do we expect more than 15% students to be outstanding?

People complain because in some English classes there can be a single A given in a class of 15 kids (under 5 out of grade of 75 kids).

Or in some cases the highest grade given to ANY kid in the grade is an A minus (not even an A).

In English classes you are graded on your discussion skills and your paper writing so it is all subjective. If the teacher is giving one A or one A minus out of 15 kids it's on purpose.

That is a little tough. But then the A is very well deserved. Is this universal in all Big 5? What about public schools?

Meanwhile, once they get into Harvard, 60% will get As.

At our private most non As are in science and upper level math courses - there is concerns about more the ability to teach than the actual grades
