"Back in the day" under Business, there were concentrations of
-Accounting -Finance -Management -Marketing -Management Info systems (this could have been under a different department. Forgot.) -Other (likely there were a couple more. Forgot) What is the "it" concentration in Business these days? Do students try different classes to figure out or do most undergrad business programs require student to select from one of the concentrations when applying? |
| You can choose general or a concentration usually. |
| DC is choosing finance and economics, but says other popular concentration at DC b-school is data science. I am hoping DC tacks on a liberal arts minor, as it may round DC out...but its up to DC. |
|
I know it's not the "it" major, but you can't go wrong with accounting.

I pivoted to the finance side later, which better fits my personality and skill. |
don't do general. It's useless. |
Don't do data science. |
|
The “it” major I’ve heard/read about is primarily finance or fintech (which sounds like finance & data science combo)
I’d suggest any student look at the classes required for degrees & that can help narrow down. For example, I’ve seen some finance degrees require calc 2 & additional math which is not required for management or entrepreneurship or accounting. If your kid hates math, that’s probably not a great path for them. |
If you read this again, can you write what you did in marketing and why and how finance is a better fit (for you)? |
What do those who choose "general" do after they graduate? MBA? Work? And if work, in what areas/type of positions? |
Elaborate? |
How is accounting doing in the world of AI? |
Entry level data science jobs are shrinking so it will be hard for new college grads to get first jobs in this field. I would combine it as a minor with a different major. |
Management trainee at Enterprise Rent-A-Car. |
| My kid switched from finance to accounting due to greater availability of internships. Graduated last year with a job offer following an internship. Currently getting a masters and studying for the CPA. Happy with the switch. |
What was the internship in and was job offer in same industry or same company? |
