Chess Team only open to GT students

Anonymous
My 9yr old DD is GT and so I get the email inviting her to join the chess club at her school. It says it is only open to kids in the GT program. My DS 11 LOVES chess, and is very good but is not GT. I don't understand why chess would be open to GT students only. My GT kid has no interest in chess. She knows how to play and enjoys it. My non GT kid would love to be a part of a chess team and would do very well. Why would it not be open to anyone who is interested? I can't imagine there would be a ton of kids who do not know how to play signing up for a chess team.

Is it during school? If so, it may only be offered to those who are already proficient with the material being covered in the class that they are missing.

No, after school.

Most schools don’t even separate kids at that age anymore. That makes no sense at all. Chess has nothing to do with anything but interest in the game and willingness to learn. No academically gifted people in our home but excellent chess players.

Make a fuss. They need to explain.

Ask whoever is in charge.

That’s ridiculous. You should 100% complain about this.

+1 Absolutely ridiculous

As the parent of 2 GT kids, this is so stupid. It’s like saying the intramural soccer team is only open to non-GT students. The assumption being that non GT students aren’t brainy enough to enjoy chess and GT students are too brainy to enjoy sports. Both premises are ridiculous. No one would dare do the second one. So it baffles me someone would try to do the first one. I’d sign your kid up and see what they say

Bring it to the Principal's attention If nothing's done, take it higher. I would be writing the Superintendent. And getting it on the news if nothing's done.

You could ask them if your kid not in GT can join first, and the reason why non GT kid’s can’t join, then decide if you’ll bring it into principals attention. Is it a parent lead program and he/she has child in GT program? Whatever it is it sounds very silly and discriminate.

This policy is very stupid and it also shows why so many parents prep their kids to score high on the exams schools use to identify "gifted" kids. It's because they know schools use it as a gatekeeping tool.

Name the school.

On the other hand you can spot the class a mile away.

That sounds illegal.
