Do you use tik tok, if you are middle-aged?

I had it for a few weeks (a friend is active and got me to sign up) and it was just terrible. It got me thinking I needed this supplement, that 12 step beauty routine, etc…and even the cute animal videos were a time suck. I found myself feeling almost addicted to random people’s bad date stories, and even watched an abundance of sorority rush reels (I’ve never been in a sorority, nor have my kids and have no idea why they showed up on my feed). I recognize it’s odd for a grown-a$$ adult, and I’m sure I’ll get flamed.

I’m not proud of this, haha. Just deleted it and feel so much better. It was making me cranky.

I use it and have my feed pretty well-cultivated to focus on my interests (financial planning, travel, thrifting, books, music, etc). It is what you make of it.

It didn't make a lot of sense to me, and any content providers who can string together a coherent thought and build out any kind of interesting narrative post on other platforms anyway.

I use it for travel ideas, animal videos, Christmas shopping ideas and then the trending tik toks. It keeps me connected to my college kids

I don’t. Instagram is enough of a time suck, I don’t need more.

No, I'm a millennial so I get the TikToks a week later on Instagram.

I do. It’s been pretty eye-opening for me. I now realize how many conversations I have had relate to tik tok. I am a psychiatrist and realized that this is why so many people are telling me that x, y, and z are part of ADD, autism, depression, etc. Some of it’s true and some of it’s not, and nearly all of it is not how I think about depression or how I was taught or teach my med students. But now I get why everyone is saying the same things.
I don’t know if other people found this in their own professions or if this is unique to mental health.

I have also found a few stand-up comedians that I like and a few different amateur singers and some stuff on home maintenance that seems helpful. And I like to dip my toe into the manosphere every now and again just to see what’s going on.

Overall, I think my algorithm has me pegged as a black, male elementary school teacher.

No, I don't have social media accounts except a FB I never use. My teens, more to the point, also don't directly use Tik Tok, Insta, Snap Chat etc. They have Discord accounts, watch Youtube Shorts and apparently are in the know anyway because all the viral hits bleed into all the different platforms, so they told me they don't need an account on every platform.

I'm 36 and don't use it. I use instagram which is bad enough, but I find multiple platforms too difficult to keep track of.

No, I use YouTube shorts as befits my advanced years

Nope. Maybe I’ll catch a recipe here and there, but it’s 99% stupid. Instagram, too.

Yes I love it. It is my favorite app. All things in moderation. I am currently reading Middlemarch, for example.

I did and it was helpful for gift ideas, keeping up with what my kids were talking about, cleaning tips and recipes BUT it definitely took a downturn once congress “banned” it and they changed the algorithm. Also, even with a curated feed, mentally it’s not great - I was shocked how much better I felt when I deleted it (I deleted it when the US took interest in it - I feel a lot better about china having my data than Meta or the current admin!)

I look sometimes when something else on another platform links me to it

I am signed up for accounts on both but I don't ever go to the site on purpose to "use" it

Same with instagram

Right now I only kind of "use" this site (DCUM) and on Reddit I am "read only" ever since I said beware of BLACK ICE and some algorithm banned my account

Probably a mitzvah anyway

Op here. I guess I discovered I’m not capable of moderation!
