Swim team and FCPS summer PE

Anonymous
Debated about posting this to FCPS, but looking for feedback about your teen’s experience with swim team and summer PE. Did swim satisfy the requirement for physical activity?

Mostly-- but there are some days where the FCPS requirement was for a certain kind of work out (keep heart rate above x for y minutes straight for example), and swim practice didn't match up. My kid had to be out in the afternoon doing a second workout running or biking a handful of times.

When my kid did HPE 10 in the summer, swim team rarely met the requirements. There were plenty of days a second workout was required.

Yes, I responded above and realized just now the question was summer swim and not club swim summer workouts. With obly summer swim team, the kid is going to be doing a second workout probably like three days a week at least. Practices aren't long enough or aerobic enough.

My kids have taken summer PE through both FCPS and Virtual VA.

FCPS did NOT accept swim workouts as acceptable workouts because they require proof of heartrate within a certain range for a specified time. They only allowed swim to be used as an activity for a small percentage of time for the overall week's workout which is bull---- since my kids were in the pool for about 3 hours a day, 5 days a week between summer swim and club swim not including meets.

Virtual VA only requires that students track their physical activity on a chart by time spent and type of activity. No heart rate requirements and no restrictions on type of activity.

FCPS Summer PE is ridiculous, but we have found Virtual VA to be vastly better in many different ways. The only downside to VV is that they do not offer driver ed with HPE10.

Agree with the above. It did not help much. FCPS did allow a portion of the time to count, but not much. In fact, my daughter got home from divisional relays and then had to hop on the treadmill to get in the FCPS required workout.

Why does FCPS do a summer PE? What is it good for?

Kids that do performing arts and want a real elective in addition will sometimes do summer PE to get the extra slot in their schedule.

It’s optional to take over summer. Also offered during the regular year.
