We are in Vienna in an older darker home so really want to add a skylight or two. I know some people hate them and say they all leak - I’m not interested in that debate please.
We have 8 ft ceilings and steep cape cod roof pitch in the rooms we’d like to do this. Any idea what this might set us back in 2026? |
| Get a new roof too. Easier to integrate them without leaks. Get ones with a curb. We had flush mount ones and they were pesky leak wise. |
|
Unfortunately we can’t afford to do the roof right now so that will have to happen separately down the line. It also is in very good condition and doesn’t need replacing. I recognized that given we are not getting a new roof done at the same time proper installation will be extremely important for the skylight.
Anyone have any idea how much this is costing recently? |

What about adding solartubes?
We had them out west. They are wonderful |
| We're going to add solar tubes. |
| Make sure to get the proprietary flashing kit that goes with the skylight. Ie - Velux has a proprietary flashing kit that you buy that integrates with the skylight to help prevent leaks. Don’t have the roofer or installer fabricate their own flashing. |
| They leak. Get recessed lighting in each room. |
Not if done correctly, I have Velox for more than twenty years. |
