We have forced air heating and central air, but our 1940 home simply gets very cold upstairs during the winter and very hot during the summer. I know this kind of issue is fairly common with old homes, it is the same thing that happens at my parents' 1942 home. Anyways, I was thinking about zoned heating/cooling. Perhaps ductless minisplits? We have used them a lot in Asia and Australia. They seem to work very well these days.
Is there a ballpark estimate for how much it would cost for a 2000 sqft home? I just need a rough idea. Are we talking about $10k for the install, or is this more like a $40k project? |
We had one installed in summer of 2020 to make a finished attic work better for a home office during Covid. 1936 house. Finished attic is two rooms. It’s been a great solution. Cost was about $6,500.
We investigated a mini split for my basement and my furnace guy estimated $6000. Since I didn’t need the air conditioning assistance, we opted for a wall hung heater. My DH and I recently commented it was the best purchase of 2025.
I think OP you should not be more than $10K. They are going to seal off some openings, but the modifications are minimum with mini-split. You can do duct or w/o ducts and just wall unit.
These prices unit + installation or just installation?
Insulate as best you are able. 1940s houses were built without much insulation. Putting good insulation in our attic made a huge difference for us.
Who is a good contact for insulation? Just any contractor? Or an HVAC company? Handyman? |
Mine with installation was 3900 just had it installed last month.
I had three installed in 2024 from Home Depot for $15k - including units + installation.
How is your attic insulation? I’d look there first. Proper insulation will make a big difference in enabling heating/cooling to be more efficient.
