| We are in VA, but I’m guessing others have similar restrictions. Specifically, in VA, a new driver can only have one under 21 passenger in the car for the first year of driving. Are people following this rule? |
| Yes. In fact, my kids read the background on why this is a rule, and enforced it themselves. |
| MD’s is 5 months and has an exemption for family. Yes, we followed. There were 2 times kid called for exemption because friend would have had to walk home in the dark on a poorly trafficked road. I said ok. |
| We’re in MD and the restrictions are different but yes we made our kids follow them without exception. As I told them, the restrictions are their safety and every rule was made thoughtfully by people who know more about transportation safety than I do. So I am not going to second guess their wisdom. |
We're in MD, which has different restrictions, but we followed them. Plenty of people don't though. |
| Feels like bad precedent to tell a teen it is not necessary to follow the restrictions... |
| Make sure they know that if caught breaking the rules, they will lose their permit (even though the chances of being pulled over are low) |
| Is it just unrelated? What if they have two siblings and you want them to drive part of the way as you go somewhere as a family? Still no? |
There's an exception for family members. |
| My experience with a teen driver is many people do not follow this rule, which sucks. We enforce it with our teen. |
Siblings and other children who live in your household, like step siblings or cousins, are allowed. |
Yeah. And many, many teens are driving around without a permit, license, and insurance. |
| We enforced it. |

This girls drove 5 others. All freshman/sophomores. The town was shattered.

| OP here and I definitely will not let my DD (who gets her license in April) drive with more than one other kid, but if other parents are not enforcing it for their teen drivers, it feels weird for her to say "I am not allowed to ride with you if anyone else is in the car" but as I understand it the statistics on accidents with more people in the car are pretty compelling so she may just have to deal with it. |
